MAMM - Is There A Good Doctor In The House?
“You really should see my doctor. He has a terrible personality, but he’s the best.”
I’ve never quite understood this admonition to choose between expertise and humanity, particularly because I know many doctors in possession of both. If, as we are told, our recovery depends in part on our maintaining a Zenlike disposition, why are we so often urged to accept doctors whose indifference or arrogance makes our blood boil?
When a member of my cancer support group suggested that we, as an act of kindness to friends newly diagnosed with cancer, compose a list of doctors to be avoided, I realized I had long been engaged in making my own personal list.
